DRIVER EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Parents and students, click HERE for DLD information concerning new teen drivers and learner permit information.

Outlined by the USBE and the Utah DLD, there are three parts to the Driver Education curriculum.  Here's the steps, in order, for students to complete Driver Education and also receive their driver license:
  • Get your Learner Permit by passing the knowledge test through the DLD.
         THEN.......
  • Pass driver ed class with an 80% or above and also complete 27 hours of classroom instruction or 30 hours of an online or hybrid class.  Class will include homework, assignments, quizzes, and passing the final test at 80% or higher.
         THEN.......
  • Complete 12 hours of Range, 6 hours behind the wheel, 6 hours observing.  For information on how to sign up for range, click on the "Range and Road" tab.
          THEN......
  • Complete 6 hours of road instruction with an instructor.  Of the 6 hours, three hours are behind the wheel training (driving), and three hours of observation (sitting in the back seat observing another student driving).  This takes place on highways, freeways, and in urban and suburban areas.  To follow a new USBOE driver education rule, students need to pass their last road session with an 80% or above or will have to re-take range, road and re-pay $80 to the SFHS Finance Office to take both over.
          THEN......
  • Pass your road/skills with a max score of -20.  You will be tested by another instructor AFTER your 6 hours of road instruction.
         THEN......
  1. Score 100% on the Traffic Trends Exam (Sorry not my rule, it's a State rule)
  2. Finish your 40 hour of required drive time with your parents.
Here's a link to the states requirements for a first time driver license: https://dld.utah.gov/minor-original/

*To obtain a license, students must have 40 hours of driving practice outside of driver education.  Ten of those hours must be at night (when it is dark).  We strongly encourage the student to have at least 10 of those hours done before the student starts the range portion of driver ed.   Parents will sign off on this @ the DLD when their students applies for their license.

IT IS YOUR JOB TO CHECK THE DRIVER EDUCATION WEBSITE TO KNOW WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE IN A CLASS, AND 0R RANGE.  THIS IS OUR MAIN WAY TO COMMUNICATE.  PHONE AND EMAIL WILL BE OUR LAST RESORT AND WILL ONLY BE USED IF NEEDED.
